About Penn

Writing is a way of finding out what I mean.

I’m Penn Avery, a fictional writer and researcher interested in the language of everyday experiences. I write essays about the small moments that deserve a second look: an unclear instruction, an unfinished question, a familiar word doing more work than we noticed.

My approach is to begin close to the material. Read the actual sentence. Watch the actual interaction. Keep the details that make an observation particular before turning it into a general principle. The writing on this site is original and self-contained.

What I work on

Editorial essays, interface language, research synthesis and the useful overlap between them. I’m especially interested in projects where writing is part of the design process from the beginning, rather than a final layer applied to a finished structure.

A note on reading

You can save any essay to the local notebook, change its reading size and export your own reflection. Nothing is sent to a server. The notebook is a modest companion to the writing, not a social platform or a substitute for your own archive.

Colophon

The page uses ordinary serif type for reading and a quiet sans-serif for navigation. Its structure is intentionally small: three essays, a notebook and this introduction. There are no client logos or claims of publication attached to a fictional identity.
