Borrowed light

The ordinary room as a light instrument. A translucent surface holds the window’s shape while a small dark fruit gives the floor a point of gravity.

A curtain, an opening, and an afternoon that seems to have stopped. Select the image to enlarge.

A room with almost nothing in it

The curtain is the subject, but the room makes it readable. Pale green and cream sit close together in value. This lets the folds register through a few small differences rather than a hard outline. The frame keeps enough floor to make the suspended fabric feel bodily.

A small counterweight

One plum interrupts the large pale field. Its purpose is not to symbolize a particular event. It adds a measured weight to an otherwise diffuse composition and suggests scale without bringing a figure into the room. Remove it and the image becomes an architectural surface study; retain it and something more intimate appears.

On constructed photographs

The image is a generated study made for a fictional artist. It is presented as an exercise in observation and visual construction, not a record of an occupied home. The materials, opening, and light were chosen as parts of one coherent scene.
