A small practice.
A considered point of view.
I’m Ell Mercer. I help ideas find a visual language that feels clear, specific and worth keeping.
My work moves between identity and editorial design. I’m interested in how a name sits on a page, how a sequence changes the way an image is read, and how a few consistent decisions can give a project a recognizable voice.
I prefer to begin with the material: the text, the people who will read it, the places where it will appear. A visual direction becomes more useful when it grows from those things rather than arriving as a style to be applied.
How a project takes shape
Listen & define
We gather the practical needs, the language already in use and the references that mean something to the project. I turn that into a short direction document with a clear question to answer.
Make & compare
I develop a small number of directions through actual applications. A poster, a page or a piece of packaging makes a decision easier to judge than a mood board alone.
Refine & hand over
The selected direction becomes a usable system. I document its typography, proportions and examples, including the ordinary situations where the design has to work without supervision.
About this portfolio
Ell is a fictional creative practice. Common Ground and Soft Season are original studies made to demonstrate a coherent portfolio, not real commissions.
