Good design
makes room.
For the content, the person reading it
and the people who will look after it.
The practice
Iām Noor Ellis, a fictional independent web designer. I work on small sites where the structure matters as much as the surface: publishing, cultural projects and everyday services.
I start by asking what a visitor needs to understand and what the owner needs to maintain. From there, I make a content outline, a working layout and a small set of decisions that can hold the site together.
The two projects here are original self-directed studies. Their names and sample material were created for this portfolio. I use them to show how I think, including the decisions that made the design simpler.
A practical beginning
Tell me what the site needs to do, what content already exists and who will keep it current. A useful brief does not need to be polished. It needs to describe the situation honestly.
